ANDY SMALLMAN

In 1980 I was an honor student in high school but found the experience to be mostly a waste of time. Lots of requirements, worksheets, and boredom. I couldn’t wait to get out.

Four years later, an 8 year-old and I were the King County Big Brothers "Match of the Year." I realized then that I was meant to work with young people so I completed college and graduate school.

A Little About Me...

“A purpose of human life, no matter who is controlling it, is to love whoever is around to be loved.”

  --Kurt Vonnegut

In 1994 my wife Melinda Shaw and I founded Puget Sound Community School, a place that helps students build on their strengths and nurtures their intrinsic motivation. The school is personalized to bring out the best in each individual student; for example, last year’s graduation ceremony honored six students and lasted six hours.

Using the Internet, I facilitate "kindness classes," providing people with ideas for positive actions which, hopefully, will make them feel good about themselves. I've gained a fair amount of publicity because of it.

I am proud to say that I've been married to Melinda for over 21 years, our wedding having taken place on December 31, 1990. I am honored to be the father of Chloe, age 19, and Ella, age 15. Nothing is more important to me than my family.

I've built this website to help people connect with me. I am available for speaking engagements, lectures, and panel presentations. I have also been the officiant at several wedding ceremonies. Please feel free to contact me.
